Heat, Family, Work, Atonement, & Food! :)

Hope you're all ready to hear about a great week!

M-I'm doing really well! This has been an awesome week. We made it through a bike week at the end of July. Ugh... It was hot, but we actually survived it. We used members a lot. It helped that we were busy with appointments so we didn't have to spend too much time outside. You see, they make us get all dressed up nice to look professional, but when you're riding your bike around town with a heat index of 112 there is nothing professional about how you look. Nothing at all!! But hey, we made it through.

I-Our investigators are doing really well. Allen is great as always. We had another good lesson with him at the visitor center. He said that besides for his wife, the church is the most important thing in his life right now. What an awesome guy! The Davies are doing great too! We had an awesome member present lesson with John Davies and his wife at the visitor center this week. So… my grandparents and my little sister Ivy went on a Church History trip this past week, and one of their stops along the way was the Missouri Independence Visitors' Center, and I "just so happened" to be there at the same time with the Davies so they all sat in and helped us teach! (It was approved) Ha! It’s the best thing ever to be teaching a lesson, and turn and say "Grandma, how has the gospel blessed your family?" The lesson went well, and it was fantastic to have the chance to see my family for a split second.

R- Working with members is always the way to go. They have cars, and air conditioning, and friends to teach, and food, and couches, and all that a missionary could ever want!

A- The area is doing great! As far as productive missionary work goes, this has been one of the best weeks in my mission. Really these past two transfers have been great! I don't feel like I'm trying any harder now than I had been before, but things are just finally working. I guess it’s just a matter of Gods timing and serving in the right area. If there are any missionaries reading this, and you are serving in a hard area just keep up the good work! It will all turn around sooner or later! You'll get there!

C- Elder Bylund is doing well too. I'm still trying to convince him to let me write his sister but it’s not going too well. It'll happen though! Missionaries must learn to be persistent! I also had a chance to go on two exchanges this week. One with Elder Spencer, and one with my zone leader, Elder Hart. Ha, they're just the best. Elder Spencer is just about the funniest guy on the planet. Elder Hart is awesome too. He flies home in a week and a half! Crazy stuff! We had a good exchange. He's a Spanish speaking missionary so we went to a Spanish appointment and to the visitor’s center. I didn't understand a word that was said for the last two hours of the day, but I was ready to step in any second they needed me! I have the gift of tongues I swear! I could just feel it! I was just waiting for that moment when your companion looks at you like it’s your time to talk, and I was going to start right in in Spanish. If I just had a little bit more faith I would have been set.

L- My Atonement study has been going well. I was reading a verse a couple days ago that talks about how we are the fruit of the atonement that Christ will present to Heavenly Father. It got me thinking about the fact that when we sacrifice anything for God, he always blesses us with so much more in return. We are Christ's reward that He won for taking on all the pains, suffering, and afflictions that we have had, or ever will have in this life. If he went through that much suffering so we could be with him again someday, and the reward outweighs the cost, then we must mean a whole lot to him.

E- I got the closest you could possibly be to the celestial kingdom while still in this life this week. That's right; I went to a giant Polynesian family reunion. It was Beautiful. It was the Fuimahono annual family reunion. Imagine three hundred of the happiest people you've ever met all dressed in white. When you step into the room someone shouts "Hey, somebody get the elders some food!" and then a giant plate of the best food you have ever tasted appears in your hands almost instantaneously. As you eat your feast you are hearing peaceful islander music, and watching the happy families laughing and loving each other. A large man also dressed in white periodically come around saying things such as "Hey Elders, do you need more ribs?" and then they load your plate up again, no matter what your answer might be. Man, all I know is I want a Polynesian family someday. They know how to live their lives!

Well that's just about all I've got for today folks! Hope you're having a great week and surviving this heat!

Love,
Elder Cluster

MIRACLE 7-20-15

M-me, I-Investigator, R- Revelation, A- Area, C- Companion, L-Lesson Learned, E-Everything Else

Hey everyone! It’s been a great week! It’s been a really busy week! Busy weeks are the best!

M- I'm good as ever, just a little tired. There was this ridiculously huge thunder storm last night that woke us up at like four o’clock in the morning. If it was a little bit later I would have made Elder Bylund go outside and run around in it with me! The thunder storms are insane here. Since it was P-day morning and every minute of P-day is precious, we decided it would be best to just start our morning studies instead of going back to bed. Yeah P-day!

I- Where to start! Our investigators are doing great! Allen is awesome as always. We went to the Visitors Center with him on Tuesday, and went through a church history tour with him. The Spirit was super strong. The sisters do a great job of tailoring things to our investigators needs. At the end he even said that he believes that Joseph Smith was a prophet, and that the book of Mormon is true! He's progressing really well, but we are taking things slow with him. He's still not quite ready yet so we pushed his baptismal date back to August 22. The Davies’ are doing well too. John's wife and grandson came to church with him yesterday. Then we met a new man named David Smith. He lives in a nursing home and referred himself to the missionaries so that we would come and give him a blessing. He actually lives in another ward's boundaries so we passed him off to the other set missionaries yesterday.

R- I love elderly people! Nursing homes are just the best! You can smile and wave at everyone and they're always happy to see you! They are just the nicest people, well most of them anyway. ;)

A- The area is doing really well. I can say this is the best that the work has ever been my whole mission. (Knock on wood) I mean like I said last week, I Feel like it changes day by day, but over all things are going really well right now. We definitely have quality over quantity though. We could always use more people.

C- I went on exchanges with Elder Jones, so he was my companion for a day. Man, I love Elder Jones. Elder Spencer, his companion, is great too! Ha! They baked Elder Bylund and me a cake this week with a note on the inside. Elder Bylund's sister thinks I'm attractive and Elder Spencer has a thing for her, so it was an unhappy note for him. That was the best hate cake I ever ate though! Haha!!

L- It pays to be bold with the people you work with because either A- they are prepared and ready for the gospel, so they'll be willing to accept your boldness. Or B- They aren't ready, so the time is not right anyway.

E- We lose the car this week! It’s going to be a hot and humid week. Pray for us, we'll need it! I love you all! Have a great week!

Love Elder Cluster

MIRACLE 7-13-15

M-me, I-Investigator, R- revelation, A- area, C- companion, L-lesson learned,
E-everything else

Hey everyone! It’s been a great week! It’s been a hot week! But we have a car!! Woo Hoo!

M- I'm doing well! My shoulder has been bothering me for a long time so I went to a physical therapist (After jumping through a million hoops to work things out through the mission medical stuff,) this week. Frankly it didn't seem too helpful. The lady gave me a long list of exercises and what not that is supposed to make it better. Hopefully it will. Besides that I'm doing well! It’s been kind of weird though.. People have started telling me that I don't have much time left when I tell them how long I've been out. The time has flown by! I can't believe I'm coming up on my 18 month mark.

I- Our investigators are doing great! Allen England is golden as always. We took him through a presentation call Gods plan for the family at the Visitor center. It talks about how families can be together forever and temples and what not. It was perfect timing because his nephew’s wife just died two days before. He was at the funeral over the weekend so he didn't make it to church but he's still doing awesome. The Davies Family is doing really well too. Being a missionary in independence is a very unique area to serve. Most first lessons you talk about the book of Mormon and Joseph Smith. Here they all already believe all that, so instead we have to start out with Brigham Young and Temples and Priesthood line of authority. We went and had a lesson with Betty (John Davies wife) and the Stake President Cato. John and President Cato grew up in the same RLDS church, so they go way back. Oh man, President Cato threw down on the RLDS church, and John was right their behind him the whole time. Anyway, our investigators are doing well.

R- I am so blessed to be serving in the center stake of Zion. This is where everything is going to happen in the end. That puts a pretty big responsibility on us as the missionaries serving here. We are literally preparing the grounds that Christ himself will walk on. I get to look out across the empty temple lot every week that Joseph Smith set apart for when the Lord will return. We know it won’t be empty for long though! The time will come, so we better all get to work!

A- Umm, Honestly the area could still be doing a little better. Allen and the Davies are doing well, but that's just about all we've got going for us right now. But hey, I'm not going to complain. That’s still more that I've ever had before!

C- Elder Bylund is doing well. Ha, he's starting to get transfer trunky. I can't blame him; he's been in this area for going on six months. It’s hard not to get a little antsy after that long. He better be careful what he wishes for though! I tell him he's going to get out cast to Tipton if he keeps talking about wanting to leave. Elder Bylund also hit his year mark this week so he's been kind of freaking out about that. He’s over the hump! It’s all downhill from here.

L- You get out of life (and a mission) exactly what you put in it.

E- It’s been far too long since I've ranted about food. I want to take this time to pay a special tribute to all the great meals I've been honored to be a part of here in independence. I'd also like to say a special thank you to all the Polynesians who truly know how to eat. The sight of a giant three hundred pound pig that's been slow cooking underground for the last sixteen hours is awe inspiring. From Chinese Buffets, to Fourth of July barbeques, to the traditional Mormon mom casseroles. I have not regret a single ounce gained. Being in an area where you get fed ever single night is a miracle in itself. Thank you for reading everyone. I miss and love you all!

Love,
Elder Austin Cluster

PS. There was a tornado warning on Monday and a bunch of us missionaries had to wait out the storm in the basement of the Stake Center. It was crazy!!  You know it's bad when Pizza Hut won't deliver. haha

Mom, The tornado is coming. If I die....I love you!!

2 YEARS IS A LONG TIME FOR ME
